NO KITTENS?

Nerv are an indie-rock band from Mexico with a worryingly British affection for toilet bowls in their artwork.

Luckily their music is not shit. Even better, it's not indie rock either, they might be an independently released rock band, but there's no kittens, stripey socks or stupid haircuts here. What is here is a bunch of songs and some of of them are dead good. One being “Road To The Sea”, all clanking bass, abrasive guitar blasts and phased shimmer, cool. More upbeat n breezy is the, um, blissful “Blissful Idiot”, the guitars, electric and acoustic are a bit of a treat. The indie-rock claim takes another slap with the metallic, controlled mayhem of “El Diablo”, guitar squalling in the approved manner and very fine drumming indeed and you know what, it's kind of like ELP (ask your Gran) with guitars, but the best is the tricky, electro piano-ed shimmer and croon of “Deceit”, a kind of apologetically menacing Chris Isaak fronting a reflective Black Sabbath that breaks out into deliberate and doomy guitar violence.
