A few weeks ago, some guys approached us and asked our opinion about their music. They gave us their “Extended Demo”, which is a CD with 7 original compositions (all which can be downloaded from their Internet site http://www.nerv.com.mx).

Nerv moves through the wide roads of indie/alternative music, in versions proposed by Radiohead or, more recently, by bands like Doves; an alternative feel mixed with electronica, noise, and dark atmospheres.

Interesting formation with three guitars, which explains the multiple layers of that instrument that can be heard in most of the songs; maybe that’s why, at times, they remind us of Sonic Youth.

Next, as a sonic guide, there are some brief commentaries on each of the songs.

• “Together” song with a retro sound, simple.
• “Only He could save my soul” a good song with a Radiohead circa The Bends style. Good melody.
• “Part Two” Instrumental cut, sombre.
• “Eulogy” My Bloody Valentine? Shoegazing at its maximum expression. Very good. The best of this demo.
• “Blissful Idiot” potential single of the band; sweet melody, Ocean Blue style.
• “Get Used+” maybe the most aggressive song of the album, or at least the fastest. Interesting, but they are at their best at thick, slow passages.
• “Desierto (the wolf in n. Y. clothes)” along the line of “Eulogy”, sustained guitar notes over a bed of thick sound, multilayered. This is the sound to exploit! Excellent.

As a conclusion, Nerv has a lot of potential. There was a need for a local exponent in this musical genre, but now we have one (and a very good one) with this band. A bit of production and I’m sure we’ll have an excellent debut in a near future.
